About this class

This extra special class is part of our collab series, where we partner up with amazing organisations to create chilled, community focused life-drawing events.

Join us for a unique collaborative session with Figure This and Make Space Studio, where we're combining life drawing with the art of woodcut printing!  You'll begin the afternoon with an hour of life drawing led by a Figure This tutor, creating a series of drawings from timed poses. You'll then be guided by Make Space Studio artist Fionnuala McGowan, who will show you how to create your own woodcut prints using your life drawings as inspiration.  Woodcut printing, an ancient relief printing technique, involves carving an image into a wooden block using specialized gouges. Once your carving is complete, you'll apply ink to the block's surface and transfer your image onto paper, capturing the detail of your carved design. You'll learn how to safely use traditional woodcut tools to add tone and texture to your design, before hand-printing your image in rich black ink.  No previous printmaking experience is necessary!

As with all our classes, this event is open to all levels of experience, with materials provided as well as gentle guidance.

We are so excited about this event, and so hope you’ll be able to join us to celebrate printmaking and creativity in a welcoming, positive space.

About Make Space Studio

Make Space Studio was launched in 2023 when Fionnuala moved back to her home city of Belfast. After successfully running regular art classes and workshops in Athens for 3 years and Glasgow for 5 years, she wanted to continue hosting events in inspiring and peaceful spaces to help people switch off and relax whilst creating something to be proud of.

Trained at the Glasgow School of Art, Fionnuala has experience and skills in a multitude of mediums and specialises in drawing, painting and printmaking. You can view some of her professional work at https://fionnualamcgowan.com/ or find out more about Make Space Studio at https://www.makespace.studio/
